Here's the short of it...
I had the idea a while ago. Actually, it came to me as I was writing Before Home Found Us. I wonderded if it had a place in my first book, so I called a cultural advisor, who said, "That's your second book."
Not wanting to force the storyline, I waited and reworked it many times, knowing it would all eventually come together -- and it did. The characters are in place and the outline drafted!
I'm STILL in the process of researching. There are many things I want to be sure to get right and information I read a while back that I need to revist. Some of my research has pulled me onto rabbit-trails as there is an overwhelming amount of information. Other pieces of my research has just scraped the surface, a result of limited data on some historical events.
However, even in all that, I am ready to reveal more to the expectant readers!
The setting is an old factory just a few villages over from Lazinov, where a greater portion of Before Home Found Us took place. Remarkably, this factory, which captured my attention a number of years ago, is finally being recognized and restored for its historical value. It opened as a museum this summer, and it was a complete surprise that I had an opportunity to visit! All the pieces just started falling in place.
When Oskar Schindler brought 1,200 Jews out of Poland, he brought them to THIS factory.
So, the story surrounds the factory with new characters and new challenges -- but don't worry, it isn't an entirely new cast. There are a couple journeys I intentionally left incomplete in Before Home Found Us, and it's time to give one of those characters the spotlight!
The picture at the top of this page is within the factory. Actually, the historian guide at the museum said they have many eyewitness testimonies of Oskar Schindler's famous final speech as he stood on a ladder to address and release the Jewish prisoners at the end of the war.
It is believed he stood on this ladder.
